A CALL TO ACTION - AAEP STUDENTS RESPOND CREATIVELY TO WORLD AIDS DAY

On December 3, 2008, AAEP students, faculty and staff hosted an OPEN HOUSE to present VISUAL ARTS and PERFORMANCE ARTS pieces as a CALL TO ACTION to assist HIV patients and their families throughout the world. This event included a BAKE SALE of delicious treats prepared by CULINARY ARTS students as a fundraiser for the WE-ACTx Clinic in Kigali, Rwanda. Beautiful, HANDCRAFTED RWANDA DOLLS that are made in Kigali by patients of the WE-ACTx Clinic and finished here in Chicago by Gallery 37 students as part of service learning were available for purchase. This event was inspired by the work of Dr. Mardge Cohen, Medical Director of WE-ACTx, and all of the health care professionals who are working for Women's Equity in Access to Care and Treatment (WE-ACTx) in Rwanda, Chicago, and around the world. The RWANDA DOLLS are available for purchase in the Gallery 37 Retail Shop at 66 East Randolph.

UIC STUDENTS ON STAGE AT GALLERY 37. NOT JUST ACTING - BEING ROLE MODELS!

AAEP Teaching Artist Brian Weddington's Fundamentals of Acting Class from UIC visited Gallery 37 on December 3, 2008, to showcase their final class project for AAEP theatre students. Part of an ongoing theatre exchange with the University of IL at Chicago, the presentation featured 10 UIC students performing Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology." This very special presentation also featured one of AAEP's Theatre Alum, Kelli Jamison. After viewing the performance and talking with the UIC students, AAEP students voiced a collective, BRAVO!

AND TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER GOES...

THE COOL GUITAR! Kimberly Johnson of Wells Academy and David Ovalle of Walter Payton, both AAEP mixed media students, donated their time and their artistic skills to create two fabulous art pieces that were sold in a charity auction at Little Black Pearl on April 26th to raise funds for ChicagoCenter for Urban Life & Culture. Along with an impressive group of artists, including Jose Guerrero, Kimberly and David each embellished a plain piece of wood cut in the shape of a guitar to create a masterpiece to reflect the "Soul of the South Side." Rumor has it that one of the band members of Billy Branch and the Sons of the Blues bought one of the AAEP guitars. Congratulations to our new AAEP philanthropists!
