TAO!

A standing ovation was in order on Saturday night, November 26th, when TAO, the internationally renowned Japanese drum performance group, performed on stage at Harris Theater as part of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project. AAEP students and staff in attendance were captivated by the energy, rhythm and force packed into a stage production that takes the primitive Japanese taiko drum into the 21st Century. AAEP students and staff alike enjoyed this wonderful cultural experience. HAI!

COLLEGE BOARD USES AAEP STUDENT’S WORK AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO EARN A TOP SCORE IN AP 3-D DESIGN

AP Central (that’s the website for everything you need to know about Advanced Placement and the College Board) just added the 2007 portfolio for AAEP student Lakesha Noble to its website. Lakesha’s breathtaking work is being used as an example of what kind of works in the Studio Art 3-D Design Breadth section earn a top score. Go online to apcentral.collegeboard.com to view Lakesha’s sculptures. Congratulations to Lakesha from John Hope College Preparatory for this outstanding honor!

ALUM MAKES THE LIST

In the Winter issue of youngArts magazine, Dylan Rabi (AP Drawing & Painting student from the class of 2007) is listed as now attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Everyone likes to keep track of their favorite artists. Congratulation Dylan!

CHICAGO IS OUR CLASSROOM

AAEP students have regularly stepped out of the building this fall to experience and learn about the arts all over Chicago. So where have they been? Well, here are just some of the places where AAEP classes have been held over the last few months: Millennium Park, University of Illinois at Chicago, Art Institute, Garfield Park Conservatory, MCA, Navy Pier – IMAX, Cadillac Theatre, Auditorium Theater, Illinois Institute of Art, Symphony Center, and on the streets of Chicago (where better to sketch architectural details?), to name a few. So what did the students do? View dance, theater and musical productions, videotape, photograph, sketch, observe culinary demonstrations, and attend exhibits, all while LEARNING! Photo: Teaching artist Patrick Miceli instructs Mixed Media students as they sketch in architectural sites.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. JEANNE WALKER!

AP sculpture instructor Ms. Walker was recently awarded the prestigious Drive Award for her outstanding achievements as a CPS visual arts teacher. In addition to receiving a monetary award, Ms. Walker will join an advisory committee led by CEO Arne Duncan.

JAZZING IT UP AT MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY

The Jazz Band developed a fan base while treating CPS guests at the Museum of Science and Industry to an exciting musical presentation during a reception on October 29th.

MAKING CLAY BOXES ON LILL STREET

Mixed Media students recently traveled to Art Reach at Lill Street for a special ceramics workshop presented by teaching artist Patrick Miceli. Students created decorative clay boxes while learning basic slab construction techniques in an environment that’s all about clay!

OPPENHEIMER GRANTS TO FUND SPECIAL PROJECTS

The Oppenheimer Family Foundation has generously awarded several grants to AAEP teachers to enhance instruction in their classrooms through special projects. Congratulations to: AP Photography Instructors – Tom Cinoman & Deborah Guzmán Meyer; AP Sculpture Instructors – Jeanne Walker & Sonja Henderson; and Mixed Media Instructors – Susan Dardar & Patrick Miceli.

ON STAGE & IN THE AUDIENCE AT ORCHESTRA HALL

AAEP vocal arts students had the distinct pleasure of not only attending a Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) concert on Friday, November 2nd, but also watched and listened as their AAEP instructors, Mr. Daniel Henry and Mrs. Heidi Sterling, performed on stage. Both Mr. Henry and Mrs. Sterling are members of the CSO Chorus. After the concert, students met their instructors in the rotunda where they congratulated them on a truly magnificent performance.

CAUGHT ON TAPE?

When it comes to organizing an audience for a recent taping of Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis, WTTW knows who to call! That’s why you may catch a glimpse of some of our aspiring AAEP jazz musicians in the audience of the November 14th taping of a Ramsey Lewis star-studded show.
